Mike is Director of the British Heart Foundation Health Promotion Research Group which he founded in 1994. He has a DPhil in cell biology and experience of research in biochemistry, history of medicine and health promotion.
From 1986 to 1993 Mike was Senior Research Officer for the Coronary Prevention Group - at the time the leading national voluntary organisation concerned with the prevention of coronary heart disease. He helped the organisation grow from four to 18 members of staff and to become progressively influential in national health policy debates. Prior to that Mike was a Wellcome Research Fellow at the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine at the University of Oxford.
As well as Director of the Group Mike works closely with voluntary organisations concerned with health in the UK and in Europe. He is currently a trustee of Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming, of the National Heart Forum and of the Joint Health Claims Initiative (of which he is Treasurer). He is Chair of the Nutrition Expert Group of the European Heart Network.
